Electromagnetic Waves

~4 marks in boardseasy~2 hrs to master8 NCERT topics

Electromagnetic Waves is Chapter 8 of Class 12 CBSE Physics, worth around 4 marks of the 70-mark board paper. It's one of the easier chapters — plan roughly 2 hours to cover it properly. The NCERT chapter has 8 topics across 3 broad areas: displacement current, properties of em waves, em spectrum. Examiner's note: Memorise the EM spectrum order — guaranteed marks.

What's in this chapter

Must-know formulas

Speed of EM waves in vacuum

c=1μ0ε0=3×108c = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\mu_0\varepsilon_0}} = 3\times10^8 m/s

frequently asked

E and B amplitudes

E0B0=c\frac{E_0}{B_0} = c

frequently asked

Displacement current

Id=ε0dΦEdtI_d = \varepsilon_0 \frac{d\Phi_E}{dt}

frequently asked

Generalised Ampere's law

Bdl=μ0(Ic+Id)\oint\vec{B}\cdot d\vec{l} = \mu_0(I_c + I_d)

Mistakes that cost marks

"EM waves need a medium"they self-propagate in vacuum; E and B regenerate each other.
"E and B in an EM wave are out of phase"they oscillate IN phase, mutually perpendicular, both ⊥ propagation.
"Displacement current is charges moving"it's a changing electric flux term (ε₀ dΦE/dt); no charge crosses an ideal capacitor gap.
